Redlining
“Redlining” is the practice of denying residents within specific geographical areas the access to mortgages, insurance loans, and other financial services. Natalie and I collaborated on an installation symbolizing the system still in use today.
In 2022 the Justice department accused City National Bank of refusing to underwrite mortgages in predominantly Black and Latino communities in LA County. The bank was required to pay more than 31 million dollars in a redlining settlement, the largest in department history.
